Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
