Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
